Reimagining AI to honor diverse ways of knowing and create inclusive digital futures
"An AI of Our Own" is an initial step in a broader vision around inclusive digital futures. Through this project, we aim to explore and develop AI tools designed to accommodate the global south context - from low-code, electricity-light solutions to the incorporation of oral histories and lived experiences.
We seek to invite global north technology experts while ensuring the work is grounded and led by global south stakeholders, avoiding the imposition of external views even on decolonization and inclusion.
Both contemporary and traditional artists who bridge cultural heritage with modern expression.
Guardians and knowledge keepers who preserve traditional ways of knowing.
Innovators who can build solutions responsive to diverse cultural contexts.
Rather than focusing on stopping AI development, we investigate all potential routes of AI technology - from LLMs to generative AI and systems yet to be invented. We balance global south leadership with innovative technology development grounded in ethics, diversity, and inclusion.
"We reimagine what AI can be when centered in and with the communities themselves."
Creating frameworks for culturally-aware AI development that can be applied across languages and contexts.
Sharing methodologies and learnings as open-source resources for other languages and cultures.
A hands-on space for tech and culture experts to experiment with culturally-grounded AI tools.
We're engaging researchers from the beginning to develop papers and case studies that both inform our program and contribute to global south-oriented narratives in academic and professional discourse.
Be part of creating AI systems that truly honor and incorporate diverse ways of knowing from around the world.
